WHAT IS NEURODIVERSITY?

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is a concept and social movement that suggests neurological differences among people should be recognized, respected and celebrated as any other human variation.

The neurodiversity movement advocates for societal acceptance, accommodation, and the valuing of neurodiverse individuals, promoting their rights and well-being.

What is the difference between neurodiversity & neurodivergence?

While neurodiversity is the overarching concept that recognizes and respects the natural variations in human brains and minds, neurodivergence refers more specifically to individuals whose neurological development and functioning differ from the societal standard or typical. It is often used to describe people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc., who diverge from the neurotypical population.

Neurodivergence refers to the condition and inner experience of being different from the societal ‘norm’,  focusing on the individual experience within the broader framework of neurodiversity.

Why is talking about neurodiversity & neurodivergence important?

Talking about neurodiversity and neurodivergence is key to fostering a society that values diversity, supports inclusion and recognizes the strengths and challenges of all its members. It's a step towards creating a world where differences are not just tolerated but celebrated as part of the rich tapestry of human experience.

More specifically, talking about neurodiversity facilitates:

  • Increased Awareness and Understanding – Leading to greater empathy and compassion, reducing stigma and misconceptions about conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others.

  • Inclusion and Accommodation – Encouraging us to create inclusive environments in schools, workplaces, and communities that support diverse learning and working styles of neurodivergent individuals, thereby allowing everyone to contribute to their full potential.

  • Identity and Self-Esteem: For many neurodivergent individuals, understanding their neurodivergence can be a crucial aspect of their identity. Discussing and embracing neurodivergence can help individuals feel validated and understood, improving self-esteem and mental health.

  • Advocacy and Rights: Raising awareness about the rights of neurodivergent individuals. It supports advocacy efforts for policies and practices that ensure equal opportunities, anti-discrimination, and accessibility in all aspects of life.

  • Innovation and Diversity of Thought: Recognising the value that neurodivergent perspectives can bring, particularly in terms of driving innovation and creativity. Neurodivergent individuals often bring unique problem-solving skills and viewpoints that can enhance teamwork, research, and artistic expression.

  • Early Identification and Support: Facilitating earlier identification and support for individuals who might otherwise struggle to recognise and understand their own cognitive and sensory differences. Early support can improve outcomes in education, career, personal development, and mental health.
